All rail car manufacturers today use X-Ray technology to ensure quality welds within their rail tank cars.  But due to the extremely manual and time-consuming nature, the physical x-rays get damaged and scratched in the process. In addition, it takes hours to get all x-rays completed, developed, and back to the facility for review.

The interpreter’s fatigue hampers their consistency. The pressure to increase production also takes a toll on the final product.

The Clear Intelligence AI vision solution automatically detects weld discontinuities on x-rays of the rail tank cars -in real time- to send back to the interpreter for final review.

Once the rail car is completely welded together, the numbering belt will be wrapped around the girth seams in order to locate potential discontinuities. The tank will then be sent through an x-ray gantry. Once completely x-rayed, the digitized images will be sent via FTP to a secured server for inferencing. (inferencing is shown as bounding boxes around the detected discontinuities).The digitized x-rays will be inferenced automatically upon arrival to the server.

The images will then be sent to the interpreter’s Clear Intelligence dashboard via FTP for review. The x-rays containing potential defects will be printed out and brought to the tank for further review or repair, if necessary.

What is Automated Visual Inspection?

An AVI system usually consists of image-capturing equipment and image-analysis software. AVI is based on the technology that is called machine vision because it allows machines to “see” and analyze real-world objects. An AVI system always includes a lighting source, a camera or another sensor (depending on the spectral range), and a processing unit. The software part is a set of image analysis algorithms that sift an image in order to detect any defects or deviations in the product’s appearance.

It is worth noting that all this happens within seconds or even fractions of a second. This processing speed is one of the major reasons why AVI is considered more efficient than any manual inspection technique. Other reasons include the properties of software—it’s tireless, consistent, unbiased, and accurate. Besides that, the “visible spectrum” of machine vision is five times broader than that of a human and includes infrared, X-ray, and UV ranges.

We have found use cases for Visual Inspection and quality assurance across many manufacturing and distribution industries. This particular article calls out specific uses for the food industry.

A Real-world Example

On April 17, 2017, a family from Virginia found an unappetizing item in their bagged ready-to-eat salad. On the bottom of a plastic bag, they discovered a chopped-up corpse of a mouse stacked between savoy cabbage leaves and carrot slices. Shocked and outraged, the family sued both the food company responsible for rodent-contaminated salad production and the retailer distributing this product.

This is only one albeit a very impressive example of what can happen if food contaminants haven’t been detected and eliminated timely. According to the statistics, microbiological and physical contamination together are responsible for 54 percent of recalls in the food industry. And, while a recall is somewhat better than a lawsuit, it still causes losses, so it is essential to detect and discard contaminated products as early as possible.

What can food companies do to detect foreign objects in their products at different production stages? One of the most reliable options is automated visual inspection (AVI) of food.

In the Food Industry

AVI is used in many industries, and the simpler and more standardized an inspected object is, the more inspection accuracy can be achieved. In the food industry, it assures that the product meets certain quality criteria: size, shape, freshness (in some cases), absence of surface defects, and, of course, absence of foreign objects. Besides simple quality assurance (pass/fail test), an AVI system can grade the products and sort them into several classes depending on their quality.

Looking for Foreign Objects

Depending on the inspected product, physical food contaminants can be detected either by optical inspection (in the visible light) or by X-ray examination. Optical inspection detects foreign objects among fruits, vegetables, berries, nuts, and grains. It can also estimate fecal contamination of poultry and thus indirectly assess its microbiological contamination. X-ray examination is used to detect foreign objects in packaged products, for example, parasites in fruits and vegetables, bone fragments left behind in the de-boning process in poultry, etc.

In the dead mouse case described above, an AVI system could have detected foreign parts among the leaves and vegetables before they were packed. Alternatively, an X-ray-based system could have inspected already sealed plastic bags, although at this stage the scrap cost would be higher. Nevertheless, a fully automated food production process would have benefited from equally automated quality inspection.

Vision in Action

In this video you will see an example of how a camera, backed by AI software, can identify discontinuities in steel plates.

There are three steel plates – one with no discontinuities and two with different variations. We set up the model to use live inferencing on the camera attached to the robot arm. The camera, for this case, only took a picture once it sensed the robot arm stopped moving for a predefined amount of time.

The software then runs inference on the image, and boxes each location it thinks it has found a defect. It then marks the plate as good or defective, and displays it to our user interface

Seemingly the majority of folks are discussing the cloud. Some have details so they are cautious, and others are blindly following lemmings off the cliff. New ideas garnish the press and so has cloud. What does it mean? What is the impact on your business? Who is the right provider? Should I move my SAP to the cloud? The questions seem endless.

What is the core business reasons you are considering the cloud? Cost? Change of resourcing? Do you expect better service? Are the service levels defined, and were they defined by IT, by the business or by both?

In a recent CIO magazine article, Liz Hebert of Forrester indicated that the ubiquitous nature of the cloud has some inherent issues. In the very same article, Greg Meyers CIO at Motorola indicated that the change creates issues, I would offer that change also takes time to develop into acceptable standards. Are these two individuals outside the norm? I think not and I applaud them for bringing to the forefront a couple of issues plaguing real cloud success.

Should you abandon the cloud? That is not the solution, but like any tool, proper selection and fit must be determined. One-size does not fit all. The cloud is, like any tool, very good in some considerations and risky at best in others. Adopting Cloud strategies require other foundational business strategies to be refined. Move it and they will come is not a good strategy.

What strategy is emerging? Well, the hybrid strategy is gaining a great position. A strategy where a customer virtualizes on-premise for Production workloads and leverages public cloud for other workloads. This strategy allows control of, and perimeter hardening of the data.

POWER TO THE RESCUE

Few environments lend themselves to a corporate cloud better than IBM Power. Being one of the two environments certified to run SAP HANA demonstrates its considerable prowess. Once the darling of SAP, Hasso stated that ‘it was evident that the idea (HANA) was good but the environment (Intel) could not scale’. In the demonstrations of the actual capabilities of IBM Power, it became clear that leveraging the innate capabilities of Power Systems virtualization and the ability of the Power processor to do 2-3x the work of Intel-based solutions. SAP and other cloud providers are leveraging IBM Power as a workhorse for their HANA clients. Incrementally when you understand how LARGE environments that can be virtualized, you also realize that size does not have to fit-all as IBM Power is suitable for very small to the largest HANA implementations. We have assisted many customers to realize significant, real savings with they chose to host SAP on-premises or with a cloud provider.

S/4 HANA Implementation
Let us start with a real use case. You are performing a Greenfield implementation of S/4HANA. The sizing completed early on in the project now concerns you as change orders come in (and they will) there will be changes in the SAP Quick Sizer report that now require re-sizing. Outages have timeline and resource implications negatively affecting the business due to unnecessary outages. If in resizing, you discover a larger environment is needed, re-allocating with Intel systems could require new systems to accommodate additional capacity not to mention many reconfigurations likely require an outage. With IBM Power, there are few situations where an outage is required as many if not most activities may be performed concurrently. Once running in production, processor cores, memory, and I/O can be dynamically (re-)allocated power assets further eliminating the need for an outage.

The second use case is a bit more complex; you are performing a Brownfield implementation of S/4HANA. In this case, make a copy of the production database into a Sandbox environment. If currently running SAP ECC on IBM Power, you may be able to allocate existing compute, memory and I/O resources to this test environment. If not, we offer temporary capacity to allow an initial evaluation. Next, build your S/4HANA environment using the HANA DB & AS sample sizing from the original ECC’s SAP Scripts. An often-overlooked benefit to testing but also deploying a full HANA environment consisting of DB + AS onto IBM Power is its internal network switching capability. The ability for VM to VM network communications, which occur over the memory bus, without having to leave the server provides an ultra-fast response, high bandwidth, and low latency. This small consideration reduces external network traffic while allowing DMO migrations over the network to exploit the speed of the memory subsystem. When we have done this, it is not uncommon to see DMO functions in the 1-2 days rather than the 4-5 days which is a big acceleration to your project timelines.
